BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is known as the “Gentle Art”.  It is a martial art that relies on technique and leverage rather than strength, which allows a smaller person to defeat a larger person. This allows everyone of any athletic background to practice and train safely.

Whether you are looking to get into it for the realistic self defense application, as a way of improving your fitness, or if your goal is to compete – at Ascension Martial Arts we have the best program in the Port Coquitlam/ Coquitlam area.

JUNIOR MARTIAL ARTS

Our junior program ("Lil' Ascenders") starts at 3 years old. Our tots learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu which is the safest martial art – as it does not have any kicks or punches involved.  In the junior program they only learn the positions of Jiu-Jitsu disguised as fun games, making it super safe and fun.

Our kids program, ("Ascenders") starting at 6 years old, is open to kids wanting to learn kickboxing and/or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Our kids learn realistic Jiu-Jitsu and kickboxing with a big factor on self defense and safety.

​

Our kids program focuses on kids learning the values of a being a good martial artist while training in a safe and friendly environment. Discipline naturally comes within the constructs of taking a martial art, so of course we focus on that as well.

KICKBOXING

Kickboxing has been quickly rising as one of the best ways to get in shape as well as being highly regarded for one’s self defense. Here at Ascension, we teach many different styles of kickboxing (Muay Thai being one, the Dutch style being another, etc. We are constantly evolving with the sport as it does around the world. Our kickboxing programs are perfect for someone just starting out, as our fundamental classes are designed for new students focusing on fitness and proper technique with with the main focus on hitting pads and not each other. This makes it a great way to learn the techniques of punching and kicking while minimizing the chance of getting injured by your partner.

 

We also offer advanced classes for those who have been training for longer. These people are looking to challenge themselves more by learning more difficult techniques and spar. In our gym we ALWAYS spar lightly. We follow the guidelines of the latest research which says that there is actually very little benefit of sparring hard because the potential for concussions multiplies.

We pride ourselves on our friendly and safe training environment for people of all levels.

MMA

MMA, (Mixed Martial Arts) has exploded in popularity over the last 2 decades. It's exactly what it says: a mixture of different martial arts. Here at Ascension, our main focuses are BJJ and kickboxing, so in the MMA classes we focus on blending the two styles together.

We take special care to make sure our students are getting the best attention to them and focus on making sure everyone stays safe and keeping it fun!

​

With Shawn's extensive career competing in MMA, as well as his sought after coaching methods (he's helped propel people into UFC, Brave, BFL, etc!) we have one of MMA's best minds here teaching!
